The North Country- Upstate New York Maple Vintage Travel Poster- Deer Tracks in Winter Snow
The North Country (the "real" upstate) is a region of New York that encompasses the state's extreme northern frontier, bordering Lake Ontario on the west, the Saint Lawrence River and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec on the north and northwest, and Lake Champlain and Vermont on the east. The North Country incorporates cultural similarities with Canada, and many of this region's residents speak French, given its proximity to Quebec. The region is the most sparsely populated but is also the geographically largest, in New York. At the 2010 United States Census, the population of all six counties was 428,357. It is known for deep snows and cold winters, and more deer than people.
