Julia Crane Tablecloth Tapestry - Judy Chicago's Reimagined Dinner Party SLC Arts
Julia Crane was the founder of the first college program for training public school music teachers in the country, which became the Crane School of Music.
This piece features her portrait atop a background of musical elements arranged in patterns and colors that pay homage to William Morris, a prominent textile designer of the period.
Featured in the middle are concentric spirals, one of which displays quotes by Julia that show her passionate belief that musicians must never be stagnant in their methods and beliefs, but always learning and evolving.
The other shows the musical Spiral of Fifths: the Spiral was chosen rather than the more commonly used Circle of Fifths because the spiral allows for the possibility of infinite modulation of tones to represent continued lifelong learning.
