"The Pastellist" Small Painting Study | Artist Willing Hands
An original pastel painting from my Willing Hands series. Painting measures 6x6" on pastel paper, matted in white to 8x8". Original artwork by Catherine LaPointe Vollmer. Colors may vary from monitor to monitor.
“Willing Hands” is a series of portraits focusing on hands at work. In this series I portray unique portraits of individuals, never showing their faces. I want to explore all the different ways we use our hands- for work, for leisure, for connecting with others. I have always been fascinated by hands as a vehicle for telling a story- not only do we talk with our hands, but our hands themselves reflect our life experiences through their individual physicality and character. Hands are a portrait of a life lived. This series tells the story of a multitude of moments that make up the richness of life, and the joy of living.
Framing tips for pastels:
- Frame behind glass, not acrylic or polystyrene. The static from plastic-type glazing will pull the pastel dust away from the paper.
- Pastels must not touch the glass, or they will smear. Use a mat or framing spacer.
- If matting, put some foam core or a spacer between the painting and the mat. This will prevent pastel dust from falling in front of the mat, discoloring it.
